About Us | Company History

Globetrotter Travel was founded by Carlos Pechtel (Bill's father) in 1956. The original company name was Globe Travel, and the firm name was eventually updated in the early 1970's. Bill and his wife Sue purchased the company from Bill's father on January 31, 2000. Prior to that time, Sue owned and operated a successful travel agency in North Edmonton called Lake Beaumaris Travel. Upon buying Globetrotter Travel, Sue and Bill merged their 2 agencies to form Globetrotter Travel & Cruise Centre. All of Sue's staff were amalgamated into Globetrotters' downtown location. Today Globetrotter has a total staff of 14 individuals including Bill and Sue as well as some outside independent agents.

Bill Pechtel is a native Edmontonian and is the only child of Carlos and Conchita. His father is German and his mother is Spanish, so Bill speaks English, Spanish and German, He attended a French immersion school from grade 7 to grade 12. Upon graduating high school, Bill went directly into the family business and has been there ever since. He has travelled extensively and led many groups that have been organized by Globetrotter. His main responsibilities are finance and administration. He has over 35 years experience in the travel industry.

Sue Pechtel is a native of Victoria, B.C. She moved to Edmonton at the age of 20 and immediately got a job in travel. She had already started her travel career in Victoria. After working for 1 agency for 8 years, Sue purchased a small agency in North Edmonton and soon renamed it Lake Beaumaris Travel as her location was close to this manmade lake. She continued to operate her agency for the next 16 years until she merged her company with Globetrotter Travel. Interestingly enough, Sue and Bill, who were married in 1992, operated 2 separate agencies for the next 8 years until they merged in 2000. Sue is an exceptional leisure agent who has a very large clientele. The growth of her client base has been strictly done by referrals - a testament to her excellent work ethic and knowledge that she brings to every booking.  Sue also has over 35 years experience in the industry.

Globetrotter Travel & Cruise Centre has an excellent reputation within the Edmonton travel community and are well known and respected by their peers.
